Southwest Healthcare System Recognized for Higher Quality in Bariatric Surgery
The Inland Valley Medical Center's bariatric surgery team.

The Bariatric Comprehensive Center at Inland Valley has once again been re-accredited by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgical Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP®), the only nationwide accreditation and quality improvement program for bariatric surgery. The Center's re-accredition is a testament to patient safety, its primary goal.

For patients who meet established criteria, weight-loss surgery can be an effective tool in helping them achieve their goals and reduce obesity-related comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension and obstructive sleep apnea, says Bariatric Program Manger Elizabeth Witous, MSN, RN-BC, CBN. Several weight-loss procedures are offered at Inland Valley. All of them are performed using the laparoscopic technique, which allows for smaller incisions and a shorter hospital stay. Bariatric surgery is a tool and not a "quick fix," notes Witous, with results that can be life-changing.

To maintain successful weight loss, adherence to post-operative guidelines and receiving insight from others is crucial. Southwest Healthcare System offers bariatric support groups every month. There are local support groups as well as off-site support groups in Corona and Redlands.
